Which County Handles My Windsor Case?

Windsor spans both Larimer and Weld counties. Why the County Line Actually Matters

Colorado law does not change at the county line, but almost everything practical about your case does. A Windsor matter filed in Larimer County is heard at the Justice Center on La Porte Avenue in Fort Collins, in the 8th Judicial District. The same kind of matter filed in Weld County is heard at the district court on 9th Avenue in Greeley. Different buildings, different divisions, different scheduling rhythms, and different local expectations about how filings are presented and when mediation gets ordered.

For a Windsor family, that translates into concrete differences: how far you drive for a hearing, how long you wait for one to be set, and sometimes how a contested issue is realistically resolved. It also means an attorney who practices in only one of the two counties is guessing about half of Windsor. Which county handles my Windsor divorce?
It depends on your residential address. Windsor straddles the Larimer and Weld county line, so where you live within town determines whether a domestic relations case is filed at the Larimer County District Court at 201 La Porte Avenue in Fort Collins or the Weld County District Court at 901 9th Avenue in Greeley. This is not a technicality. It affects the judicial officers who will handle your matter, the scheduling pace, and how far you drive for hearings. We can usually settle the question in the first few minutes of an initial consultation.
Do I need to drive to Fort Collins to work with you?
No. Windsor is roughly 20 minutes from our Old Town Fort Collins office at 110 E Oak Street, but we handle most of a Windsor client's matter by phone, video, and email, including the initial consultation. In-person meetings are available when they genuinely help. Court appearances happen at whichever district court has jurisdiction over your case, and we appear in both the Larimer County and Weld County courthouses regularly, so the county split does not create a gap in representation.
Do you handle Windsor Municipal Court cases?
Yes. Windsor Municipal Court at 301 Walnut Street handles town ordinance violations, which follow a different track than a county or district court criminal case. The potential consequences are generally lower, but a municipal matter still creates a record and can carry conditions that affect employment and licensing. People often assume a municipal citation is not worth taking seriously and then regret that later. Read us what you were given and we will tell you which court it belongs to and whether it warrants a defense.
What happens if I am arrested in Windsor?
Where the case ends up depends on which agency made the arrest and how serious the charge is. A Windsor arrest may involve the Windsor Police Department, the Larimer County Sheriff, the Weld County Sheriff, or the Colorado State Patrol, and the case may proceed in either county. In the meantime, stop discussing the matter with anyone but an attorney, including on recorded jail phones, and follow every bond or protection order condition exactly. Then call us. Does the county split affect a Windsor DUI case?
It can. A DUI stop on the Larimer side generally produces a case in Larimer County, and a stop on the Weld side generally produces one in Weld County, which means different courthouses and different local practice even though Colorado DUI law is identical. Separately, and regardless of county, a DUI arrest starts an administrative DMV case about your license that runs on a much shorter clock than the criminal case, generally about seven days to request a hearing. Call immediately rather than waiting for a court date.
Can you prepare a will or handle probate for a Windsor family?
Yes. We prepare wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and advance directives, and we handle probate administration, guardianship, and conservatorship. For probate, the relevant county is generally where the person lived, which for Windsor families means confirming which side of the line their address fell on.
